A committee formed to re-examine Harvard Medical School’s conflict-of-interest policies will meet on Thursday, Dean Jeffrey Flier announced recently, the New York Times reports (Wilson, New York Times, 3/3). Harvard last month announced that it would fortify its conflict-of-interest policies. The school has received criticism over its conflict-of-interest policy.

A computer system enabling medical students to practice diagnosing and managing patients in simulations using real patient data is being developed in an interdepartmental collaborative project between UK-based Leicester Medical School and the Computer Science Department at the University of Leicester.

Data released recently by the Association of American Medical Colleges, or AAMC, show that first-year enrollment at U.S. medical schools in 2008 totaled more than 18,000 students, the highest enrollment in history. However, although this development might mean the country gets more physicians, it doesn’t necessarily translate into a big boost for family medicine or primary care, says one physician workforce expert.
