We are excited to announce that after much deliberation by our judging panel, the finalists for the MD Connector 2009 Competition on Health Education Reform have been selected.

These finalists will compete for placement during the 2009 Health Care Education Symposium at Mayo Clinic, Rochester, MN April 26-28, 2009.

Many medical students struggle as they enter the clinical setting because they have difficulty in integrating and applying what they have learned in the preclinical classroom. In order to address this challenge, active learning activities were added to the Essentials of Patient Care course for second year medical students. This PowerPoint was presented at the 38th Annual STFM Conference on Medical Student Education and presents 1) the structure of the course that encompasses cultural competency, health policy, preventive medicine, epidemiology/evidence-based medicine, and medical ethics; 2) examples of the active learning activities; 3) the formative assessment of students’ performance in these activities qualitatively and quantitatively; and 4) the use of these assessment data to improve …

A Rural Health Service Learning Elective (Rita Lahlou)

Although many curricula are designed to increase student interest in primary care, few have been evaluated with regard to participants’ final specialty choice, controlling for characteristics known to predict primary care practice. This session will describe an elective designed to foster interest in primary care, in which second year medical students manage operations at a free clinic, establish a continuity relationship with patients, attend a class covering primary care topics, keep a reflective journal, and complete a community project. We evaluated the impact of this course by surveying a sample of 257 alumni who graduated between 2003 and 2007

A Practical and Engaging Approach for Mind-Body Regulation Training in Medical Education (William McCann PsyD)

Self-regulation training including biofeedback, progressive muscle relaxation, the Relaxation Response, applied relaxation and now mindfulness, have been commonly employed for the treatment of stress and the psychophysiological disorders, and moderating the complications of chronic illnesses. There is growing empirical support for the usefulness of mindfulness and relaxation training for the stresses of medical practice and the enhancement of the professional performance of physicians. This presentation will describe an approach to self-regulation training that is a combination of deep relaxation, applied relaxation and mindfulness.
