AAMC: Washington Highlights reports that the House Labor-HHS-Education Appropriations Subcommittee on July 15 approved (11-5) its FY 2011 spending bill that provides $176.4 billion in discretionary spending for the coming year, an increase of $12.7 billion (7.7 percent) but $1.5 billion less than President Obama’s request. HHS Secretary Kathleen Sebelius announced the awarding of $96 million in grants to increase diversity in the health professions workforce and encourage nurses to choose careers as nurse educators. The grants will go to schools to give scholarships to students from disadvantaged backgrounds with financial need, many of whom are underrepresented minorities. Funds will also provide low-interest loans to nurse faculty students – students who want to teach nursing – as incentive for nurses to select careers as nurse educators..
